Like I said, it's been a long time since I've read the book and seen the film, but that was the general impression I remember. She's aware of it, too, and perhaps to her it was better to seem evil in front of all those people than to seem stupid. When Michael was a student, she was insistent that he complete his homework and read to her not only because she couldn't do it herself, but she didn't want him to be like her in that regard. The impression I got was that she wasn't overly intelligent to begin with- she was illiterate, sure, but there are also other subtle tells-also easily frustrated and temperamental, didn't think for herself much, and was almost childlike in her approach to moral dilemmas. She is a proud, stubborn character, and knows that her illiteracy makes her appear stupid and/or lesser compared to the others in the room. Filmen blev produceret af Sydney Pollack og Anthony Minghella, der begge døde med et par måneders mellemrum under produktionen. Her reasons for being ashamed are her own, I suppose. The Reader er en amerikansk dramafilm fra 2008 instrueret af Stephen Daldry efter manuskript af David Hare baseret på Bernhard Schlinks roman Der Vorleser. Nostalgia and affection mixed with trauma and heartbreak, really. I wouldn't call his feelings for her love. He has been horrified by what she did however, she took the fall for several other former Nazi guards, which isn't an entirely befitting punishment either. I think he saw she was ashamed and upset- she was making her own choices there, even knowing the consequences, and it was probably a mix of both- he was still hurt that she vanished, horrified by her crimes from before they even met, and then on top of that, wanted to help her retain her last shred of dignity. Plus, in my opinion, she seemed to behave and think in ways much like someone close to his age, despite being several years older. I think there was just some attraction between them that they both ignored the tabooness of. I read the book, but it was a good while ago.
